by Davis Thattil | Jul 29, 2018

Engineering and project management consultant firm Royal HaskoningDHV has secured a new contract to conduct a detailed market study for the upcoming Haramain High-Speed Railway project in Saudi Arabia. The contract, awarded by Al Shoula Consortium, will task Royal HaskoningDHV with conducting a comprehensive survey programme throughout the railway corridor, as well as at the important station locations of the project.

The 449km-long Haramain High Speed Railway will connect the Saudi cities of Makkah and Madinah through Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City.

It will be undertaken at various key locations along the route such as highway check points, airport terminals and bus and taxi interchanges at Makkah and Jeddah. After the project is completed, a complete technical analysis will be undertaken to predict future travel demand on the rail route.

The Haramain High-Speed Railway project will be operated by Al Shoula Consortium on behalf of the Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) under a 12-year railway operations franchise contract. The technical analysis will help SRO to determine the number and requirements of passengers, as well as devise an operational strategy to provide efficient services.

Royal HaskoningDHV transport and planning director Dr Marwan Al Azzawi said: “We have been working in the Middle East for over 50 years and our local knowledge of Saudi Arabia, combined with the international expertise in railways and transport planning, makes us well placed to undertake this important market study.”
