Deal signs with Japanese firms for first EV pilot project

By Davis Thattil | Feb 27, 2018
Saudi Electricity Co (SEC) has signed a deal with Japanese Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), Nissan Motor Co and Takaoka Toko for the first electric vehicle (EV) pilot project. Saudi Arabia is keen to develop its auto industry as part of efforts to diversify the economy beyond oil and has teamed up with Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp to conduct studies for that.

As part of the pilot scheme, SEC will borrow three electric vehicles from Nissan while electric chargers will be provided by Tepco and Takaoka. The pilot is hoping to develop fast-charger stations that can charge electric vehicles in as little as 30 minutes, much less than the overnight charging currently recommended for any electric vehicles.
